Ahsan Manzil ##
One of the oldest monuments in Dhaka is the Ahsan Manzil, located on the banks of the river Buriganga in old Dhaka at Kumartuli in present day Islampur. Formerly it was the residence and Sadar Kachari of the Nawab family of Dhaka, which was given the title of British India. This building, rich in impeccable ornaments, is now being used as a museum.
Brief history
# In 1820, there was the garden house of the Mughal emperor Enayet Ullah, which was bought by the French merchants in 1640 from Enayet Ullah’s son Sheikh Matiullah to build a trading post.
# After the battle of Palashi in 1757, the factory came under the control of the British. The English later returned it to the French.
# In 1830, Khwaja Alimullah purchased the factory from the French and renovated it to make his residence suitable.
# In 1759, his son Nawab Abdul Gani started the construction of a new palace on the east side of the French mansion which was completed in 179 and named it “Ahsan Manzil” after his son Khwaja Ahsan Ullah.
# A strong tornado on 17 April and a devastating earthquake on 12 June caused considerable damage to Ahsan Manzil which was renovated by the Nawab.
# A meeting held here in 1908 decided to establish the Muslim League.
The heirs of the Nawab family decided to sell this Ahsan Manzil at auction in 1974 when they were unable to preserve it due to their internal strife and deteriorating financial condition. Instructed.
